MAISON TANZANITE

We deal in one stone. Tanzanite is mined in a single place on Earth — the Merelani hills of northern Tanzania — and it is the only thing this house sells.

We choose our pieces from the workshops that make them, and we say so. On every page you will find the metal named, the treatment of the stone stated, and the smaller stones called what they actually are. Where a workshop has not answered a question yet, that is written down too.

THE STONE, IN MOVEMENT

COLOUR THAT DEPENDS ON THE ANGLE

Tanzanite is trichroic: it shows a different colour down each of three directions in the crystal. A still photograph can only ever catch one of them, which is why a tanzanite never quite looks the same in a picture as it does on a hand.

It is also why the cutter matters more here than with almost any other stone. The orientation they choose decides which of those three colours you see for the life of the piece.

Can a tanzanite's origin be proven?

Yes, trivially, and it tells you nothing. Every tanzanite is from Merelani, so origin distinguishes no two stones. Traceability is the harder question.

My tanzanite is damaged. What can be repaired?

Abrasion polishes out. A chip usually means recutting and losing weight. A clean split along the cleavage plane generally means the stone is finished.

Tanzanite is unearthed in a single place on Earth: the Merelani hills at the foot of Kilimanjaro. We do not mine it and we do not cut it. We choose finished pieces from the workshops that make them, ask each one to state in writing where the stone came from and what has been done to it, and put the answer — or the absence of one — on the piece's own page.
