THE TANZANITE GUIDE

THE STONE OF MERELANI

One stone, one hill, found nowhere else on Earth.

Tanzanite is unearthed in a single place: the Merelani hills at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Everything the Maison makes begins there — with rough crystal sorted by hand before it ever reaches the cutting room.

01
ONE ORIGIN

Commercial tanzanite is found only in the Merelani hills of northern Tanzania, near the foot of Kilimanjaro — a deposit a few kilometres long.

02
TRICHROIC

The crystal shows different colours along its three axes — blue, violet and burgundy — which is why the cutter’s first decision matters most.

03
RARER THAN DIAMOND

A single known source and a finite deposit: estimates give the mines decades, not centuries, of remaining production.

04
A MODERN STONE

Identified in 1967, tanzanite is one of the youngest gemstones in fine jewellery — with no antique supply to draw on.

FROM HILL TO ATELIER

Every stone is bought rough, directly from certified small-scale mines, and travels with its documentation from the sorting table to the cutting wheel to the setter’s bench. When a client asks where their stone comes from, the atelier can answer with a place, a date and a parcel number.

THE MAISON
CARE

Tanzanite asks for gentler habits than diamond: no ultrasonic cleaners, no sudden heat, a soft cloth after wearing. Every Maison Tanzanite creation may return to the atelier for cleaning and service, for life.
