CARE & REPAIR
- Wash it in warm water with a little soap, and a soft brush. Warm soapy water is the only cleaning method that is always safe for tanzanite.
- Never put it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Neither is recommended for tanzanite: the vibration can open a fracture and the heat can cause thermal shock.
- Keep it away from sudden changes of temperature. Tanzanite is stable in ordinary wear, but it does not tolerate very high temperatures or an abrupt change in them.
- Take it off before anything that involves a hard knock. Tanzanite is 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, has fair to poor toughness, and has cleavage — a tendency to break when struck — so a sharp blow can split it rather than chip it.
- Keep it clear of strong acids. Hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid will attack the stone.
Every Maison Tanzanite creation may return to the maison for cleaning and service, for life.

ONE HILL, AND NOWHERE ELSE
- Tanzanite has one source on Earth: the Merelani hills of northern Tanzania. There is no second deposit anywhere.
- It was found in 1967, when a Maasai herdsman came upon transparent violet-blue crystals weathering out of the ground at Merelani.
- Tiffany & Co. became its first distributor and named it after the country it came from, introducing it to the world in 1968.
- The stone is the violet-blue variety of the mineral zoisite, and it is trichroic — it shows three different colours along three directions of the crystal, which is why the cutter’s choice of orientation decides what the finished stone looks like.
ON TREATMENT
Almost all tanzanite reaches the market heat treated: it begins as brownish zoisite, and heat brings out the blue and violet. The colour is permanent and the stone needs no special care because of it. The report accompanying a Maison Tanzanite creation names any treatment the laboratory can detect.
